A Site Reliability Engineer must be familiar with both systems engineering and software engineering. They are able to build large-scale, fault tolerant systems and effectively run them. Site Reliability Engineers often work on whole lifecycle services, engaging and improving them. They support other technical services like system design consulting. And they develop software frameworks and platforms before they go live. The Site Reliability Engineer may need to scale systems using automation mechanisms.

To qualify for a Site Reliability Engineer position, applicants need to have degree from a four-year college in Computer Science or a related technical field that uses coding. They also need to know computer languages like Ruby, Python, C, C++, Go and Peryl. SREs should be able to debug and optimize code, automate routine tasks and analyze and troubleshoot various systems.
