Jon and Chris sold their prior education startup (Everblue.edu) and moved to CA to attend Stanford's Sloan Fellows program with the goal of launching another education company. Once there, they teamed up with Nicki Boyd who moved from the UK and had spent her prior life investing in high growth companies. Here's the founders' vision in their own words:
We believe that a life of purpose is the only one worth living. We also like big challenges, which is why we spent our entire time at Stanford exploring how to impact the education system at scale. There are twenty million kids aged 0 to 4 in the US, and twenty times that globally. Ultimately we want to reach all of these children and enable them to fulfill their potential wherever they start in life.
We are building the WordBug, a device to be worn by a baby that counts the number of words spoken to her in real-time. It is like a FitBit for words. Stanford’s Center for Infant Studies inspired the idea by showing us that the number of words a child hears between birth and age four is the greatest predictor of success in life. We believe this critical window of brain development is where we can have the greatest impact.
