OUYA became the 2nd most successful kickstarter campaign in history by laying out a vision for a game console with the independent games scene in mind.
We launched our first $99 console last year and have sold hundreds of thousands of units. We recently announced plans to make the OUYA app store available on other hardware platforms and are in talks with some big players in the home theatre world. In the not too distant future there will be an OUYA (or OUYA enabled device) in millions of homes. The goal is to eventually make OUYA the place to launch an indie game, and for many developers it already is.
While the OUYA console is powered by Android, the entire UI is made from the ground-up in-house. Our entire store, payment system, developer/gamer/reviewer/admin portals, etc are also developed in-house. We have big plans for the platform including adding achievements, leaderboards, and multiplayer. Scaling will also be a pretty interesting challenge!
We're using Rails primarily for the back-end but are experimenting with NodeJS. We're also rewriting the developer portal in AngularJS.
