In 1929, on the brink of the Depression, our father and grandfather “Poppy” Sol took a bold step. Twenty two years old, he had already worked full time for 10 years to support his family, but he wanted to live the American Dream. Donning his best of suits and an assured smile, Sol walked away from the bank with a loan to start his own business, the Newark Nut Company.
He began selling premium bulk nuts and dried fruit at the popular Mulberry Street open-air market. Sol quickly developed a reputation for providing the very finest and freshest nuts available, roasting them to perfection himself.
Fast forward to 1999, when grandson Jeffrey and friend Ben launched NutsOnline from their college dorm rooms (of course), to bring the family's savory selection of nuts, dried fruit, snacks, candy, coffee, and customizable gifts to everyone on the magnificent Information Superhighway. Over the next decade, we endeared ourselves to customers across North America by continuing our family's tradition of superb quality and service, while constantly growing our product selection, improving the customer experience, and architecting the software to enable and support it all.
But we can't tell you the number of times we'd tell new friends about NutsOnline and then heard them say, "I'm excited to check you guys out. Nuts.com, right?" Even Rachael Ray made this mistake on her show! So in 2012 we changed our name to Nuts.com and engaged the brilliant team at Pentagram to help us express our brand from head to toe. As you can imagine, this wasn't easy for a self-funded company but it's been a boon for business.
Now, 91 years later, the third generation continues to reinvent the business, and although much has changed, much is still the same—the same family, the same values, the same quality, and the same level of care. We buy directly from growers, we roast our nuts and pop our corn the same day we ship them to our customers, and we pride ourselves on the internal and external software we've built to make it all happen smoothly.
Along the way, we have built and rebuilt several generations of ecommerce sites, constructed our own smart and efficient warehouse management systems, and created a robust business intelligence platform. Today our tech stack includes VueJS, NodeJS, commercetools e-commerce microservices, Rails, Redshift, Looker, and others, all powered by an AWS-based cloud toolkit.
Basically, we do "the old-fashioned way" in a new-fangled way. And that's where you come in! :)
