A Site Reliability Engineer is tasked with combining software and systems engineering in order to create and run large-scale, fault-tolerant systems. His or her primary focus is to ensure that critical internal and external systems have a near constant uptime and offer users the best experience possible. Because this is a highly technical field, a four-year undergraduate degree is required in computer science or in a similar field that has a lot of programming, such as mathematics or physics. Site Reliability Engineers are also expected to be fluent in at least one industry-standard language, if not more, such as C, C++, Java and Ruby.
Site Reliability Engineers need to have strong analytical skills as well since maintaining services will require measuring and gathering large quantities of data and interpreting that data correctly. They should also need to be able to debug and optimize code and automate routine tasks without direction.
