New York boasts a diverse economy made up of strong insurance, real estate, media and health care centers. New York is also a major financial center and home to some of the world’s largest stock exchanges including the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. In addition, the city has a thriving high-tech scene called Silicon Alley.
Easily one of the most diverse cities in the country, New York has a large immigrant population. Close to a third of the city consists of foreign-born residents. Thus, the city’s urban landscape has a rich patchwork of ethnic enclaves, where immigrants congregate to socialize, such as Chinatown and Little India. New York also has an effective public transit system, including the subway, which provides an easy way of getting around the city.
